Lilly’s Bad Day
Lilly (our dog) did not have a good day today. First she went to the vet and then to the kennel (to stay until Sunday, as we’re leaving town).
Going back to the vet note for a second: the vet took a look at Lilly’s eyes (like she has before without saying anything but “good!”) and proceeded to say “Looks like she’s going to need surgery to fix her eyes”.
I immediately thought “Oh no”! But then she continued to explain the reason is her bottom eyelids are slightly concave which causes the lashes to poke her eyes a little bit every once and a while which causes a little excessive moisture.
So I asked a few questions about the procedure and things. Then I raised the all-important question: cost.
She didn’t know.
It’s hard to describe how many things I thought all at once, but here goes:
1) This must not be a life or death situation or even all that important since she doesn’t even have a ballpark in her head.
2) Wow, this can’t be a commonplace surgery that has been performed countless times if she doesn’t know the cost.
3) Why hasn’t this been brought up on previous vet visits when other vets have looked at her and said nothing about her eyes (which have always been a little watery).
So, after doing a few more things, she leaves the room and comes back with the stuff Lilly needs and says
“The surgery is seven hundred dollars.”
I wanted to laugh, really hard, and I really had to fight it because I almost burst out laughing. I thought to myself “You have GOT to be kidding me”. Who in their right mind is going to pay $700 to stop their dog’s eyes from being a little extra moist?!?
We don’t live in Beverly Hills, ok? And, yeah, I’m looking a little nicer today (turtleneck sweater, clean-shaven, etc.) but that doesn’t mean that I can or will even consider what is basically cosmetic surgery for my dog who is not at all harmed by this “condition” which happened to magically appear between our last visit to the vet and this visit.
Needless to say, we won’t be going back to that vets office again. This is the second time this same vet has tried to recommend me things for my dog that will only benefit the vets office, not me or my dog.
I’ll take my business to an honest vet who wants what is best for my dog firstly and for me as well.
Unbelievable.
